Introductions please

Welcome to our blog of Unstoppable Gals. We thought we’d start off by introducing ourselves.

Guik (left) and Karine (right) in Bucerias, Mexico in February 2019.
My name is Karine. I’m the one on the right. I’m a 37 year-old mother of three ranging between the ages of 8 and 12. I’m married to my college sweet heart and work full time. It’s a busy life. It sounds perfect doesn’t it? Well it is…most of the time. Sometimes it’s hard, frustrating and exhausting. Sometimes I want to strangle my significant other and run off to Mexico where I can give massages to strangers on the beach in exchange for tacos and tequila. A girl can dream! Thankfully, I have my bestie, Guik. I can live vicariously through her. It’s a pretty sweet deal. She goes out, she meets a ton of people, she wines and dines, she tells me all about it, I daydream while I’m doing homework with the kids and she pays the bill. It’s a win-win situation.  I would describe myself as an impulsive, animal loving, bookworm and compulsive eater. I eat healthy about 20 minutes in my day before giving up and injure myself every time I work out. The dumb thing is, I never stop trying.

Why didn’t I get to pick who I was on the picture? Fine, I’ll be the one on the left. My name is Guik (not “Quick”, not “Gwen”, not “Gwin” either). I was born and raised in Hull, Quebec and I am a proud Canadian of Chinese descendance. Some people refer me as a banana: yellow on the outside and white on the inside. I live a healthy lifestyle. I workout frequently and I love it. It keeps me sane! I also enjoy staying in, relaxing on the couch while sipping wine. I try to have good healthy eating habits and love cooking but also like going out with friends and try new restaurants. Life is too short to deprive ourselves of the little pleasures in life. It’s all about balance.

I’m newly single and don’t have any kids unless you count my two dogs (feels like a dating profile, doesn’t it?). Coming out of a long-term relationship, I’m not sure I know how to be single. My friends convinced me to start online dating, “It will be fun”, they said. They were so wrong! So, I’ve been using dating apps but I just feel like going through dating profiles is like window shopping. It’s too easy to swipe left because of one bad picture or simply because the person made spelling mistakes in their profile description (my pet peeve). What happened to meeting someone somewhere and getting to know them in a traditional way? One thing I know is that dating is hard.

How we met
Guik (left) and Karine (right) in front of the
Parliament of Canada in 1995.
We met in high school at the age of 14. Even though our lives have taken us in completely different directions, we’ve managed to stay in touch throughout the years and always remain friends. Here’s a picture of us during our first year of friendship. Aren’t we cute!
We’ve grown a lot since. We were so naïve back then. Now we know what kind of shit life can throw at us and how to handle it. Most of the time. Or maybe not. Ok, not at all. We’re totally just winging it. But we’re not naïve anymore.

What to expect

This blog is our way of sharing those crazy, sometimes funny, sometimes serious, moments in our day-to-day lives. It’s our coping mechanism and we hope that it will become your coping mechanism as well. You’ll definitely feel like you’re not alone. We’re all a little crazy and that’s what makes us normal. So let’s just laugh about it.

We hope that you’ll share with us as much as we’re sharing with you.

Read on and enjoy!
